Family Bahamas Cruise Review

A review of my family's recent cruise on Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas.

Our First Family Cruise: Liberty of the Seas Delivers Magic (and a Few Learning Moments)

Our First Family Cruise: Liberty of the Seas Delivers Magic (and a Few Learning Moments)

When we booked our first family cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas for March 16–20, I'll be honest—I was nervous. Four people in one cabin? A 5-year-old and a 4-year-old at sea for five days? I had visions of mutiny, meltdowns, and me stress-eating my way through the buffet line.

But first, we had to get there. After three days of highway driving from Kansas City to Fort Lauderdale—complete with the inevitable "Are we there yet?" chorus from the backseat—we finally pulled into port. Liberty of the Seas had big shoes to fill.

Spoiler alert: it wasn't quite the disaster I'd imagined. In fact, it was pretty wonderful.

The Real Talk on Cabin Life

Let's start with the elephant in the room: our interior stateroom was small. Very small. Four people in tight quarters tested everyone's patience on rainy afternoons when we couldn't escape to the deck. But here's the thing—you're not supposed to spend all day in your cabin. Once we accepted that and embraced the ship as our actual living space, the snug quarters became a non-issue. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was functional, and the cabin attendant kept everything immaculate. It's tight, but it works.

Crew Hospitality That Actually Felt Genuine

This is where Liberty of the Seas truly shined. The crew members—from our cabin attendant to the dining room staff to random crew we'd pass in hallways—were genuinely kind and attentive. They remembered our kids' names. They anticipated our family's preferences. They went out of their way to make our trip smoother. Families book cruises for the people, not just the itinerary, and Royal Caribbean's crew delivered.

Food: Reliable Wins and a Few Misses

The breakfast buffet was genuinely excellent. The variety kept everyone happy—the kids loaded up on chicken tenders and burgers while we grabbed quality sides and fresh options. It's the kind of reliable, well-executed buffet that takes pressure off mornings when you're herding young kids toward the day's activities.

Lunch and casual dining were solid across the board. Sorrento's pizza deserves special mention—it was delicious and became our go-to when the kids were hungry at odd hours (which, let's be honest, is always).

The main dining room was more uneven. My steak was underwhelming—nothing wrong with it, just forgettable. The southern-style fried chicken fell into the same category. But the escargot appetizer was genuinely great, and the sweet chili shrimp was a standout. The Caribbean-style pork chop was solid, nothing to write home about.

One practical note: Finding seating for four during peak dining hours was legitimately challenging. If you're cruising with a family, plan to arrive early or be prepared to wait.

    What Made This Trip Work

Honestly? Managing expectations and embracing the cruise as a cruise—not as a floating resort where you hide in your cabin. The ship is your playground. The crew is your support system. The food keeps you fueled. And the memories? Those are what you're really paying for.

Would we cruise again? Absolutely. Would we do Liberty of the Seas again? In a heartbeat.
